FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Christmas Eve is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. However, for online shoppers, it is also a big day for package deliveries, presenting prime targets for thieves.

In the past few days alone, according to Fairfield police, hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise has been stolen in the form of packages, right from residents' front porches.

“I always have my packages delivered (to Fairfield Police Headquarters),” Lt. Jim Perez said. “People should always have their packages sent to work if they can.”

However, Perez acknowledged that not all employees can have packages delivered to their place of work. He said, in such a case, you should always make sure someone has to sign for your package.

If you are unable to have a friend or family member sign for your online purchase, it may be best to opt to pick your package up at a delivery distribution center, such as the FedEx facility on Lordship Boulevard in Stratford.

A Jennings Road resident, according to police, is just one example of how an opportunistic passer-by could lead to a great loss.

On Monday, the resident reported a porcelain Mobil Gas sign he had purchased on eBay was stolen after the eBay shipper notified the customer that its records showed the package had been delivered.

After calling the online auction site, it wasn’t difficult to determine, for the resident, that the $300 sign had been stolen.

Connecticut residents can contact FedEx in Stratford at 800-463-3339 to confirm the status of a package. For those using UPS, call 800-742-5877.
