WILTON, Conn. A fire at Wilton Crest off Wolfpit Road sent on Sunday afternoon one firefighter to the hospital and brought fire crews from Westport, New Canaan, Weston and Norwalk to help battle the blaze. By 1:30 p.m., much of the smoke that had been billowing from the building had stopped.
The people were all able to get out except a few animals, Wilton Police Capt. John Lynch said.
Firefighters had the fire under control until the roof collapsed and the flame reignited, police said.
A member of the Wilton CERT team said two firefighters were taken out of the blaze. According to Lynch, one firefighter from New Canaan was sent to the hospital, but he did not know about his condition.
Ron Hitter of the Wilton EMS said the firefighter was injured in the back of the head by a piece of the falling ceiling and was taken to Norwalk Hospital. Hitter said he was "not too badly hurt."
"I saw the roof collapse, there's no question my unit got hit," resident Todd Mitchell said, adding that he had no idea of the damage to his apartment.
When he saw the flame, Mitchell said he grabbed his 12-year-old son and ran out of the apartment. By that time, the fire department was already on its way, he said.
The fire was reported, Lynch said, by one of the units residents and that when the fire department was dispatched, crews could see the blaze from Route 7.
Wilton Crest resident Mary Joyce, who lives in a unit not far from where the fire started, said she didnt know there was a fire until her daughter called to tell her.
I couldnt believe it, Joyce said. Nothing happens in Wilton Crest.
For Bette Lebang, whose condo is around the corner from where the fire started, she also had no knowledge of the blaze until police told her that she and her golden retriever needed to evacuate.
