WESTON, Conn. Green up and clean up Weston on Saturday at the Green Up Day trash pickup scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. at Norfield Church Parish Hall, 64 Norfield Road.
Teams of volunteers at the Weston Kiwanis Club-sponsored event will pick up trash along Westons main roads and town-owned property. The filled large disposable bags will be transported to the transfer station by other volunteers.
Areas covered will include Weston Road, Newtown Turnpike, Georgetown Road, School Road, Lords Highway, and the areas surrounding the Weston schools, Weston Town Hall, the library, Keene Park and Bisceglie-Scribner Park. In addition, residents are encouraged to green up their own neighborhoods.
Volunteers will be handing out trash bags at the carriage barn at Norfield Church at 8:15 a.m. Kiwanis can designate an area for residents to clean up, or they can choose to pick up in their own neighborhood.
Westons Green Up Day was established more than 40 years ago. In 1995, 23 years after the first Green Up Day in Weston, with the assistance of local legislators, a bill was signed by then Gov. John Rowland that established the last Saturday in April as Green Up Day for the state of Connecticut.
Come join the Kiwanis Club and many other organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Weston High School Key Club and Weston Garden Club in this year's Green Up Day event.
Bring your cellphones so you can call the number you will be given when your bags are full so they can be picked up and taken to the transfer station. Complete picking up trash by noon, so the volunteers can take it to the transfer station before it closes.
Before the cleanup begins, the Kiwanis Club will serve breakfast and honor Alice Barreca as this years winner of the Millie Best Environmental Award, given to a Weston resident who best exemplifies the late woman's love and concern for the environment. Barreca is a Weston Garden Club past president who set up and maintains the Aspectuck Land Trusts Benjamin Wildflower Preserve on Old Stagecoach Road.
