Travelers crowded the station and parking lot in South Norwalk. Buses were picking up riders at the train station and at the nearby Norwalk police station to take them to New Haven. There was also a shuttle to take people to the DoubleTree Hotel in Norwalk.

Trains were operating to Grand Central Station for passengers who were looking to return to New York City.

"Norwalk Transit has buses arriving to transport passengers to Fairfield and Bridgeport," Norwalk Police Chief Tom Kulhawik said via Twitter @NPDChief.  "Officers directing commuters to the arriving buses."

He reported that a number of officers were at the South Norwalk station "assisting with traffic and passengers temporarily stranded due to derailment. Patience is key."

Traffic was very congested in the South Norwalk area due to the large number of cars arriving to pick up stranded commuters. Police were in the area directing traffic and keeping order.

All Metro-North and Amtrak service was suspended between South Norwalk and New Haven.

More buses were reportedly being sent in to assist in shuttling the stranded passengers.
