Just In Time For 'Shark Week,' New Sighting Reported Off Long Island Waters

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Beachgoers along the Eastern seaboard have been spooked by what has been a record year for shark attacks.

The latest Long Island shark sighting comes one week after four fishermen about 45 miles off Jones Beach videotaped a great white shark devouring the carcass of a whale (above).

Now, just in time for the start of the 28th annual "Shark Week" on the Discovery Channel on Sunday, comes word of a sighting off Long Island waters.

Lifeguards at Overlook Beach in Babylon on the south shore of Long Island reported seeing a dorsal fin about 60 to 80 yards offshore on Wednesday afternoon, according to CBS New York.

After the lifeguards instructed swimmers to get out of the water, the beach was closed for more than an hour. It has operated on a normal schedule since Thursday.

A week earlier, four fishermen about 45 miles off Jones Beach videotaped a great white shark devouring the carcass of a whale.

There were 52 unprovoked shark attacks in the U.S. last year, compared with 20 elsewhere in the world, with none of the attacks leading to fatalities, according to Time Magazine.

A total of 65 percent of attacks involve people surfing or doing other board sports, reports Time.
