Labor Day Getaway, Bridgeport Fire Cause Traffic Jams On I-95, Merritt

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — If you're looking to getaway for the weekend, or just get home from work or school, you have a lot of company on the highways Friday evening in Fairfield County. 

There's a steady stream of traffic on I-95 in Fairfield on Friday afternoon. The backup begins in Stamford and continues northward into Bridgeport.

The state Department of Transportation is reporting 21.9 miles of traffic congestion on I-95 from Exit 7 in Stamford to Exit 27A in Bridgeport. 

Traffic delays have been reported for much of Friday afternoon in Bridgeport due to a large fire in an abandoned rubber factory that sent billows of smoke over I-95

Things aren't much better on the Merritt Parkway, where 22.6 miles of delays are reported northbound from Exit 35 in Stamford to Exit 52 in Trumbull, DOT said. 

Delays on I-84 in Danbury are a bit easier to manage, with backups for 4 miles from Exit 3 to Exit 7, DOT said.
