More Heavy Rain Extends Flash Flood Watch Another Day In Westport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- As heavy rain continues to pound Fairfield County, a Flash Flood Watch has been extended until 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Flash Flood Watch also includes most of Connecticut, Westchester and Putnam counties in New York and northeast New Jersey as well as New York City and parts of Long Island.

Heavy rain showers and isolated thunderstorms were increasing overnight and expected to continue into Tuesday, the weather service said.

Rainfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour are possible, which could cause flash floods in urban and poor drainage areas.

The saturated ground from the past two days of rain could also cause streams and rivers to overflow their banks, the weather service said.

On Monday, more than 3.5 inches of rain was recorded in Fairfield, according to the National Weather Service.

More heavy rain was expected overnight, with temperatures dipping into the mid-40s. Another half to an inch of rain was possible.

On Tuesday, more rain is in the forecast with a high temperature in the mid-50s to 60 degrees. Temperatures will fall into the mid-40s again by evening.

It will begin to dry out on Wednesday, when the sun will return with a high above 70 degrees.
