Near Blizzard Conditions Expected In Westport Thursday Night Into Friday

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning on Wednesday, with near blizzard conditions predicted for Fairfield County from Thursday night into Friday morning.

A coastal storm is expected to bring strong winds, dangerously cold wind chills and the potential for heavy snowfall, the weather service said.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Friday for all of Connecticut, the entire Lower Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey and all of southern New England.

Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are possible, with 1 to 2 inches predicted for the Thursday morning rush hour, followed by a lull. The most significant snowfall is expected to fall starting Thursday evening and continuing into Friday.

The wind-chill factor will drop to about 15 degrees below zero to 5 degrees above zero late Thursday night and into Friday morning, with drifting and blowing snow expected. Winds will be 15 to 25 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph possible. 

Driving conditions are expected to be hazardous, the National Weather Service said, and motorists are urged to travel only in an emergency, and to bring a flashlight, food and water in their vehicles. Visibility will be a quarter- to a half-mile.
