The warning extends into interior southern Connecticut. Heavy, cold rain was falling across the state on Wednesday afternoon.
Freezing rain could lead to ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch of ice as the rain continues with temperatures in the mid-30s.
Ice can easily form on untreated surfaces because the the ground and pavement are so cold. Dangerous travel conditions are reported on roads and walkways.
Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads, slow down and use caution.
Temperatures will drop into the 20s by evening, which could cause icy and slippery conditions, the weather service said.
Significant melting is expected during the daylight hours from Wednesday through Saturday with temperatures above freezing and additional rainfall expected on Wednesday and again Thursday night into Friday.
Initially, melting snow and ice will fall from bridges and roofs, creating a travel hazard close to structures. As the warming persists, the potential for ice jam flooding from streams and rivers will increase near obstructions, bends and narrow spots in rivers Thursday through Saturday.
Snow-covered structures, such as garages or flat-roofed buildings, as well as trees could collapse under the weight of the wet snow and ice in these conditions, the weather service warned.
