FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Peter Lanza, father of Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza, spoke to the New Yorker for his first interview since his son's deadly shooting spree in December 2012.

Lanza told the New Yorker he had not seen his son in two years at the time of the shooting that left 20 first-grades and six educators dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Although he said it never could have been predicted, he still questions himself and wonders if he could have helped prevent the tragedy all together.

Lanza went on to say that it took him six months for a sense of reality to set in about what his son did and that even now, he doesn't fully understand what took place, the New Yorker said.

Actually all of the past mass shooting were far right wing extremist including this one. I know you right wingers hate fact but those are the facts. Moderator I see that you have been removing all left wing factual posts, while allowing lies , propaganda , name calling and factless posts by the right wingers . If this continues I will be forwarding screen shots of all posts involved to the CEO of the DV.. Its pretty clear the moderator has taken his or her personals views and put them before being a true news source

If it were not for the right wing kooks and their obsession with guns and destruction this would have not happened in the first place. Repeal the 2nd amendment

I find this rather interesting as i have a few friends that work special ed in a school locally. And it amazes me how they cover up exactly how some of these kids think and behave. These kids at 7-8 years old threaten the aides bite and punch them kick them and say they want to be evil and kill animals the aids and teachers. The school takes the issue lightly and ignores it to the extent that they do not want the parents to remove them from the system for professional help. THE REASON????? MONEY. The schools do not want to pay professionals to deal with this situation and fired all the special needs professionals several years ago. And further more they allow these kids to run the roost in school and do anything they want. REASON AGAIN MONEY. App 100,000.00 a year savings if they keep these kids mainstreamed. Simply put they are ignoring it and do not want to loose the money. I am willing to bet this is exactly what happened to Lance and we all know the OUTCOME. No one wants to deal with the mentally ill. And further more the state did nothing but pass unconstitutional gun laws asked by a group of gun grabbers seizing the moment to further there agenda. Bottom line no one gives a dam about this unless it is to further there cause save money or better ignorance from the parents. Just a thought!

After wacthing my parents over some forty years spend miilions and equally as many hours in the care of my oldest brother who suffered from a football realted injury in the 1950's.. Long before anyone was aware of the failure of football helmets. Much less an understanding of the injury and it's lifelong effects.
Having had to set aside my own goals and those of my siblings as well. Mr Lanza cries at the steps of how he wishes his son had never been born. That he was evil.
I pity his selfishness. I cried for my bother and if I had as a young person some way to help..I would have. I did love him.
Adam Lanza did a most heinious thing via his madness. His dillusion.. and from what I understand of his home life, his parents lost their son to their vanity and self interests long before he entered that school. He never really got the care he should have. If he had, Adam would still be ill perhaps but all who perished that day might not have.
Mr. Lanza's guilt may need treatment ..I hope he seeks it. And for the sake of others who may have a son or daughter like Adam.. Our nation to better understand Mental illness. So we find a path for those who suffer that does not lead to the abyss so many end in.

Thank you. Understanding the true selfless act of your parents and yourself in the care of your brother is love.

What I noticed about the statement from Peter Lanza was how many times he used the WORD "I" even after passing of time it really appears he still does not understand that his under aged child (with special needs) is his to care for, to protect, to teach to seek the help needed until the right one helps. And, yes if it means giving up your time and life IT IS WHAT YOU DO. Morals and laws indicate that is what our society demands of caregivers to those souls who cannot do for themselves. He was your son, no do overs you deal with what you are given, we all do.

I agree. He seemed to have distanced himself both emotionally and by miles. He left his ex wife to handle an enormous problem on her own while he created a new life and marriage for himself. He blames his sick child for everything and has the nerve to say he wishes his son was never born .

If a human being lacks empathy, there is very little that can be done to help them. They are a serious danger to animals, children, and people.

The problem is that there is no place for people like this where society can be protected from them and they can get the help they need. We know they are ticking time bombs. They usually have a history of torturing animals, violent fantasies, etc. but what does anyone really do? In this case it was especially egregious because Mom gave the kid an actual arsenal and taught him how to use it.

I ask this question-----How many similar situations do we have in Fairfield County ????? Don't Blame the Dad for I am sure that we have NUMEROUS situations where either the Mom or the Dad (or both) are in COMPLETE DENIAL !!! and or will not work together !!!!!!

Theres a lot of tangents we go off on avoiding whats really wrong. The real lesson is if you are helpless and somebody wants to kill you you will probably die, if you are responsible for other peoples kids & somebody wants to kill them they will die too. Putting several hundred kids, teachers & staff in one place and then legislating them into helplessness is the stupidest thing ever conceived of. ALL Malloy and the legislature needed to do was lift the gun free school laws. Let citizens exercise their rights if they want, like they could before that stupid law was passed by the left wing extremists and our kids started getting killed with boring regularity.
This knee jerk reaction is as responsible for these atrocities as banning fire extinguishers would be if there was a deadly fire.
It doesn't matter "why" these people go off the deep end as much as why they choose schools. They choose them because its safe to do so.

You can't make a child see you, come on, we can all point fingers yet if the families of these innocent children are forgiving, who the heck are we to say or write anything? Those families lost their children, all we do as parents is be aware of what our children's actions are. Adam was not a child, he was out of control and Nancy should of spoke out more to get him help. She took 4 shots that ended her life, very sad ..Hats off to the dad for speaking out and facing the facts as he has. He is not protecting his son, he aches for those families as we all do..

One of the "lessons"--if there are any from this case--is that psychiatry is utterly useless, aside from prescribing medications that render freaks like Lanza so drugged and lethargic they cannot do evil. What the shrinks do well is to invent various "disorders" and "syndromes" that get them on talk shows and provide bases for stupid books that people prattle over at cocktail parties and school meetings. What really needs to be done is to legislate so that monsters like Lanza can be confined to barred, padded hospital cells and medicated into harmlessness. Psychiatry is bunk; and its practitioners are nothing but pharmacists and frauds.

It is true that the majority of individuals who have become mass shooters such as this young man were taking psychiatric medications. Many of these drugs are known to have side effects that can cause suicidal or even homicidal feelings or thoughts. Perhaps what needs to happen is a complete re-assessment of the whole pharmaceutical model of treatment itself. It is not only a major problem in the area of psychiatric treatment, but in the treatment of systemic disease in general. ... There are better, safer and healthier options that work quite well and without the negative side effects. Unfortunately our entire medical system and society is so indoctrinated into the mega billion dollar pharmaceutical model because that is where the big profits are to be found.

I think that his father said that Adam was not taking any medication. I think that Lanza was probably much sicker than anyone realized and was most likely psychotic and seeing and hearing things. His reality was not ours and no one knows what he was thinking. He needed to be in a hospital.

Jackie: you are so right!
Two years, and no contact?! No wonder Dad was clueless!
All I can think is if this kid only had someone!! anyone!! in his life who cared. Things might have been very different!
I can't imagine (being that dad) and having to live with not only the guilt of turning your back on your own kid but knowing you raised a Hitler!

Not turning your back on your kid, would've been a good start!!
