Blasting and controlled rock removal began in early October on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and that schedule will continue for the next six weeks, said ConnDOT spokesperson Kevin Nursick.

When blasting is set to begin, both the northbound and southbound sides of I-95 between the Route 1 and Route 7 interchanges will be shut down and all traffic halted for five to 10-minute intervals. State police and ConnDOT crews use slow-moving roadblocks to stop the traffic, which has caused long delays through the area.

Additionally, variable message signs along I-95 have been deployed to warn drivers when blasting is about to occur.

The thruway widening project is taking place on both sides of I-95 between exits 14 and 15, and the blasting associated with it is occurring two to three times per day.
