Weston’s annual budget referendum continues from noon to 8 p.m. at the Weston Middle School gymnasium. Some voters already cast their ballots after the Annual Town Budget Meeting last week, but the rest of the town will have their final chance to vote on the budget Thursday.
If the majority votes in favor of the budget, it goes into effect July 1. If not, the town will have to reconvene for a new budget meeting to make adjustments at a later date.
The Annual Town Budget Meeting did not make any changes to budget that the Board of Finance approved last month, because the meeting did not have enough voters in attendance for a quorum. The current plans calls for a total of about $65 million in town spending next year. The budget would require a mill rate of 23.89 on this July’s tax bills, a decrease from the current mill rate of 24.02.
The proposal also includes about $1.1 million in capital improvement projects, about 20 percent less than the previous budget. The list of projects includes a library roof replacement, repairs to town bridges and buildings, new equipment for the Weston Police and the Department of Public Works, and renovations at Weston Public Schools.
The referendum is open to anyone registered to vote in Weston, as well as all people who own a parcel of property valued at more than $1,000. The registrars of voters ask residents to bring identification and proof of residence to keep the check-in process moving.
