Woman, Aunt Charged in South Norwalk Street Fight

A fight developed early Saturday on South Main Street after "a large tumultuous group" gathered in front of the Moose Lodge, according to Norwalk Police Sgt. James Walsh. After six to eight cruisers arrived, two women alleged became angry with each other and began fighting as onlookers watched, rolling about on the ground, cursing, yelling, pulling hair and punching.

Shayquanna McKinney, 20, of Stratford, and her aunt, Tamarra McKinney, 28, of Washington Street, were arrested and charged with breach of peace. Bond for each was set at $250.

Six to eight police cruisers arrived just before 2 a.m. after police were alerted to the crowd of about 30 people. Some people were yelling, "Just get them out of there, take them home, they're drunk;" others were trying to calm things down, police said. Some people walking away yelled back at the group.

The two women began to argue and push each after crossing to Elizabeth Street with a group of eight to nine people, police said. They fell to the ground and were actively fighting, Walsh said. Onlookers did not want police to stop the women, yelling, "Don't hurt them!" and "Leave them alone!"

One woman was put in a cruiser, the other walked across the street.

After the arrests, the crowd became confrontational, acting in pairs. Some were pushed back to the sidewalk. "With the threat of being arrested, more people walked away," Walsh said. Officers used their discretion and did not make more arrests so as not to incite the crowd as it dispersed.

Walsh said the angry crowd was on the street for about 15 minutes.
