Jean B. Sweeney, 89, Of Danbury, Teacher At St. Peter’s

DANBURY, Conn. - Jean Byrnes Sweeney of Danbury died Sept. 18. She was 89.

Sweeney was born Feb. 7, 1925, to Joseph and Katherine Keating Byrnes. She was a graduate of Danbury High School and Danbury State Teachers College (now Western Connecticut State University). She was a Danbury native, and a longtime teacher and parish leader at St. Peter's Church in Danbury. She was a longtime teacher in public and parochial schools. She started her teaching career in West Hartford and continued it in Weston. She taught for 16 years at St. Peter's before retiring in 1985.

She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church of Danbury, was a eucharistic minister for many years. She also served as president and was a longtime member of the St. Peter's Women's Guild.

Sweeney is survived by her sons, Robert, an attorney in New Haven; and Bill, an editor in New York; daughters-in-law, Doretta Sweeney and Ellie Sweeney; two grandchildren; a nephew; and four grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, John J. Sweeney; and son, Kevin.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at St. Peter Church, Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
