Raymond A. O’Hara, 86, Of Norwalk, WWII Veteran

NORWALK, Conn. - Raymond "Ray" A. O’Hara Jr. of Norwalk died Aug. 11. He was 86.

O’Hara was born Aug. 19, 1927, in New York City to Raymond A. O’Hara and Florence (Armstrong) O’Hara. He grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., and moved to Norwalk in 1949. He graduated from Regis High School in New York City. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II as well as a member of the American Legion. After serving in the Navy, he received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.

He began his teaching career at Fairfield College Preparatory School and then went on to teach in public schools in Wilton, Weston and Greenwich. He held two master’s degrees, one from the University of Colorado and one from Fairfield University. He was an assistant professor in the Education Department at the University of Bridgeport until his retirement in 1985. He was a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Norwalk Soup Kitchen and the Association for the Blind.

O’Hara is survived by his wife, Julia Schumacher Fallo O’Hara; brother, Walter J. (Priscilla) O’Hara; daughters, Mary O’Hara and her partner, Donald Tolles, and Ann Salvino (Fred); sons, Raymond O’Hara, Edward O’Hara (Elissa), and Thomas O’Hara (Cindi Bigelow); stepdaughter, Kathy (Fallo) (Jon) Hall; stepsons, Russell Fallo (Karen), Joseph Fallo (Johanna), and Mark Fallo (May); and 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by his parents; and his first wife, Mary Ellen (Splan) O’Hara.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 203 East Ave., Norwalk. Interment with full military honors will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, 223 Richards Ave., Norwalk.
