Steinert-Threlkeld was born in New Jersey on June 20, 1954, the son of the late Aubrey and Elizabeth Morgan Threlkeld. He was the editorial director of B2B Publishing at IBT Media and was an avid road cyclist.
Steinert-Threlkeld was a lifelong journalist who investigated and explained how technology is used to achieve business goals. He had a wide range of interests in various sectors of the economy. He explored and explained the intersection of information technology, covering corporate performance in capital markets at Securities Technology Monitor and Securities Industry News, and at Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable, and covered technology itself at metropolitan daily newspapers as well as Interactive Week, Baseline and ZDNet.
In 2001, Steinert-Threlkeld created and founded Baseline magazine, which examined how businesses achieved or failed to achieve their objectives, through the use of information systems. He and his team were finalists in the General Excellence category in the National Magazine Awards presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors within four years. Baseline also won, among other honors, the Grand Neal Award, for an investigation that uncovered a series of deaths in Panama that related to a faulty piece of software developed by a St. Louis company.
Steinert-Threlkeld was a former business columnist and technology reporter for The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Texas. He and his wife also owned and operated a collection of weekly newspapers in the Fort Worth area in the mid-1980s. Steinert-Threlkeld is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
His passions outside of work were cycling and photography. Steinert-Threlkeld tracked his rides and the rides of others on his blog, Edge of the Road.com, over the years. He has logged about 6,000 miles each year riding through Connecticut and New York. In 1995, he cycled across the United States in 22 days.
He is survived by his wife, Kayte Steinert-Threlkeld; sons Zachary Caleb Steinert-Threlkeld of San Diego, and Shane Noah Steinert-Threlkeld of Stanford, Calif.; twin brother John Threlkeld of Evergreen, Colo.; sister Laura Threlkeld Anello of Rockaway, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at Cobb’s Mill Inn, 12 Old Mill Road, Redding.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Weston Warm-Up Fund or the Connecticut Humane Society.
