To the public:

Overwhelmed with emotion, I was left speechless on Election Day when I learned I had won the honor and privilege to serve and represent the 28th District in Connecticut. It was another step forward in living the American Dream.

I was overcome with joy after pouring my heart and faith into this campaign and believing in the positive and transformative power of our democracy, to have the support and trust of the very people I care so deeply about — the people of Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, Weston and Westport. I was overcome by the magnitude of the moment. It truly was humbling.

Of course, this is not my victory. It is ours — everyone who supported me, and especially those who volunteered their time and energy to help spread our positive message and instill a renewed faith in the political process.

I believe this is also a victory for those who did not vote for me; most importantly because they exercised their right to vote, but also because I am just as committed to them as I am to those who voted for me. I am the state Senator for all residents of the 28th District, and, as promised, I will work on all of your behalf to tackle head-on, the challenges we face and build a brighter future for Connecticut.

We will do this by working together, and by bringing a heightened level of civil discourse to the debates in Hartford. We will do this by putting people above politics, and worrying more about doing what is right and necessary rather than better positioning for the next election.

We have our work cut out for us — that is for sure. Our struggling economy demands that we take decisive action to make our state more business friendly, now and in the long-term, and that will have to include making strategic investments to improve our ailing transportation infrastructure. Our families and businesses owners also need a break from their already too-high tax burden, so it’s time we finally take a responsible approach to state spending, borrowing and taxation to bring about real relief.

We can do this, and we will. Importantly, too, we will do so without sacrificing our responsibility to ensure our communities are safe and that the neediest among us get the support they need to get back on their feet.

I am incredibly proud of the campaign we ran, because it reflected the values that I strive every day to uphold as an elected representative of our community — character, integrity and leadership. We won by staying focused on a record of accomplishments and our positive message of commitment to community.

The day after Election Day, I had time to reflect on the campaign and all the great people I met along the way and their encouraging messages of prioritizing our state government to truly serve the needs of our communities. I am energized to do my best to represent our communities and its people.

We can and must do better. We did do better. The people we represent deserve it. I’m proud to say our victory on Election Day is evidence that an individual can win by taking the high road.

Thank you again for placing your trust in me. I will work tirelessly everyday to earn it.
