Letter: Norwalk Democrat Supports Wall Street

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalker Ganga Duleep has written this letter to the editor. She refers to the headquarters of Garfunkel for Mayor, located at 42 Wall St.

Thirty years ago, when nobody wanted to have anything to do with Wall Street, Norwalk, I thought it important to support my hometown over the wealthier towns surrounding us. The restaurant I started there endured for decades in a hostile environment. I know firsthand the devastating effect prolonged upheaval from construction and city officials' indifference can have on the bottom line of a small business. Therefore, I am grateful to Andy Garfunkel for the following reasons:

Far from referring to Wall Street with derision like Art Scialabba and John Reilly, Andy Garfunkel has the sensitivity and good sense to realize that Wall Street is indeed the heart of our city. His presence there, in spite of the cost and the liability of "being surrounded by construction" is sending a powerful message to the electorate. It shows Andy cares enough about our struggling small businesses to give them his support when they need it most. We welcome the foot traffic his campaign generates. Andy is savvy enough to recognize the most important requisite of any rental: location, location, location.

Like most Norwalkers, I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. In appalled disbelief, I have watched the increasing polarization along ideological lines that has paralyzed our city and our nation. Therefore, I am doubly pleased that Andy Garfunkel did what was right for him and for Norwalk in a bipartisan manner –by renting space for his headquarters from my good friend Tony, a staunch Republican. Way to go, Andy.

Mr. Scialabba, it is indeed time for Norwalk to "move forward" away from the stagnation we have been mired in under your leadership – and that of your protégé Mr. Moccia.
