3 Redding Residents Fall Victim To 'Grandparent' Scam, Lose Nearly $200K

REDDING, Conn. -- Three Redding residents have told police they fell victim to a phone scam that bilked them out of a total of nearly $190,000, according to NBC Connecticut.

Scammers have been calling victims around the country and claiming to either be a family member or to have a family member in custody in the scheme, NBC Connecticut said. They then demand the victim wire money to a bank account, NBC Connecticut said.

Each Redding victim was taken for a different amount: one for $18,000, another for $60,000 and a third for a total of $111,000, NBC Connecticut reported.

Police warn residents that the victims typically target elderly victims. If a family member is truly being held in custody, residents are asked to call their local police department, NBC Connecticut said.
