Officers approached what they thought could be a log in the water, but they then noticed it was a capsized kayak with a woman in a life jacket desperately holding onto it, Lt. Kraig Gray said in a press release Tuesday.

“This kayaker was showing signs of dehydration, exhaustion, fatigue and even some confusion and [was] clearly in serious distress, and the officers were able to get her into the boat,” he said. Gray said it's not known how long she had been in the water.

They took her to waiting Greenwich Emergency Medical Service personnel on the shore, he said. She was transported to Greenwich Hospital and was recovering Tuesday, Gray said.

The woman was found close to Bowers Island, which is about a mile from Island Beach.

“In this instance the kayaker was wearing her life vest and clearly this made a big difference for her," he said. “We would like to remind boaters that although the Long Island Sound looks picturesque it potentially could be very dangerous to you."

Greenwich Time reported that the woman, a 58-year-old Greenwich resident, had gone out for a sunset paddle when the kayak capsized. She was pulled from the water just before sunset, Greenwich Time reported here

Gray also said people who are going out on the water should have a plan and should let people know what they are doing and where they are going in case of an emergency.
