Man Arrested In I-84 Chase In Danbury Charged With Escaping From Police

DANBURY, Conn. — A suspect charged in a high-speed chase on I-84 through Danbury, which included a Connecticut State Trooper firing his gun at the suspect's car, has also been charged with trying to escape police custody.

Early on Friday, July 17, Kenneth Lyden, 32, of Wolcott was arrested on multiple charges, including engaging in a pursuit and assault on a police officer. The charges stemmed from a pursuit on I-84 westbound that began in the area of Exit 10 in Newtown at 3:06 a.m., police said.

During the pursuit, Lyden drove off I-84 near Exit 6 in Danbury at a high rate of speed toward a trooper who was outside his cruiser and who fired a shot at the car, police said.

The pursuit ended after Lyden crashed off Route 7 in New Milford, got out his vehicle and engaged Troopers and Danbury Police Officers in a physical altercation, police said. He was eventually Tasered and taken into custody, state police said.

He was arrested on multiple charges and held on a $250,000 bond.

On Saturday, Lyden was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury for medical evaluation.

Upon his release at 11:50 a.m., he was to be transported by the state police to Troop L, in Litchfield, where he would await arraignment, police said.

While the State Trooper attempted to secure Lyden in the vehicle for transport, the accused was able to escape from custody and gain control of the vehicle, police said.

He was quickly apprehended in Waterbury a short time later, with the assistance of Waterbury and Prospect Police, state police said.

There were no injuries reported.

Lyden will appear in Danbury Superiour Court on July 20 to be arraigned for the charges stemming from the July 17 pursuit. Those charges include: first-degree criminal attempt at assault; two counts of assault on a police officer; reckless endangerment; interfering; engaging in pursuit; reckless driving and misuse of plates.

Further charges are forthcoming as a result of the escape incident, which remains under investigation, state police said.
