On Nov. 17, police received a complaint from a 30-year-old woman who said Luis Vigo, 33, had hit her in the head several times during an argument. The woman had lumps on the side of her head, bruising near her eye and a lump on her lip, according to police reports. By the time officers arrived, Vigo had left, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

An officer spotted Vigo's car Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the King Kennedy housing complex, where police said he had previously been arrested on trespassing charges. Vigo was sitting in the car, and the woman who had filed the complaint was sitting next to him, police said.

Police found the weapon under the front seat while searching his car. There were live rounds in the magazine, according to police reports. Vigo told the officers that he carried it with him for protection because he had been robbed and beat up in the past.

"I don't play offense, I play defense," Vigo told the officers, according to reports.

He was charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, carrying a gun without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol or revolver and carrying weapons in a motor vehicle. He was held on $5,000 bond and appeared in court Wednesday.
