The fatal crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on Route 53, also known as South Street, near the Bethel border, Danbury police said.

According to the police report, Edward Kish, 45, of Brookfield, was driving a 2001 Honda Accord north on South Street and was slumped over the wheel, according to witness statements. Kish lost control of his vehicle, crossed the double yellow line and hit a 2007 Buick Lucerne, police said. That car, which was southbound on South Street, was driven by Jane Shannon, 78, with William Shannon, 77, as the passenger, both of Bethel, police said.

The impact forced the Buick Lucerne backward and into a 2011 International box truck operated by Roy Bass, 59, of Middle Island, N.Y., police said.

All four people were transported to Danbury Hospital, where Kish Jane Shannon and William Shannon were pronounced dead. Bass was treated and released.

William Shannon was a former Bethel first selectman, and Jane Shannon formerly served as town clerk, according to bethel.patch.com.

The roadway was closed until about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The collision remains under investigation, Danbury police said. Witnesses are asked to contact Sgt. Rory DeRocco or Officer Lance Brevard of the Danbury Police Traffic Division at 203-797-2157 or 203-797-2156.
