The explosion occurred at 8:38 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Main Street and Hoyt Street in Norwalk. Underground repair work continued Tuesday afternoon at the scene.

The explosions shattered the windows and caused damages at the New York Bakery on Main Street, and also damaged a car parked out front, police said.

The Norwalk Police Department, the Norwalk Fire Department and Norwalk Hospital Emergency Medical Services all responded to the scene, and found smoke and fire coming from three manholes on Main Street.

Two people sustained minor injuries, and were treated by EMS personnel at the scene, police said. They declined transport to the hospital.

Connecticut Light & Power had to cut power to six other customers, including the Norwalk Courthouse and the Norwalk Library, in order to make repairs, said spokesman Mitch Gross said. Those locations were without power for less than an hour, and power has been restored, Gross said.

The Norwalk Library will reopen at 1 p.m. Tuesday, it said via Twitter.

CL&P workers were continuing to perform repairs at the scene of the explosions early Tuesday afternoon and trying to determine the cause.

The explosions are believed to be electrical in nature, police said. CL&P crews are working with fire officials to determine the cause, Gross said, but he could not speculate on that.
