Henry Wagmeister, 57, who lived in Weston and was employed by Truck Tire Sales &?Service in Stamford, was wearing high visibility clothing when he was hit, according to the police report. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the police report said.
He had parked his Ford service truck behind a tractor-trailer and was fixing a tire on the its fifth axle when the accident occurred about 2:48 a.m., police said. The vehicles were on the highway's right shoulder near Exit 3, police said.
Another tractor-trailer, driven by Garfield Simmonds, 48, of Launderhill, Fla., drifted into the shoulder, struck Wagmeister’s service truck and forced it into him, police said.
Wagmeister was killed on impact, according to police. The service truck was totaled. Landy Narcisse-Parra, 25, of Elizabeth, N.J., the driver of the disabled tractor-trailer, suffered leg pain and glass in his face from the impact, police said.
Simmonds and Narcisse-Parra were taken to Stamford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The highway was closed for several hours as State Police investigated. Traffic was exited onto Route 1. As morning rush-hour began, they reopened one lane but traffic backups into Westchester County were reported.
State Police were continuing to investigate the accident.
