Westport Police Use Taser On Weston Man After Speeding, Foot Chase

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport police used a Taser to apprehend a Weston who led police on a foot chase after being stopped for speeding and drunken driving early Friday, police said.

Shortly after midnight, Office Howard Simpson attempted to stop a motor vehicle for speeding on Strathmore Lane, police said in a statement.

The driver stopped, but as Simpson approached the car, he took off at a high rate of speed, engaging the officer in pursuit, police said.

After turning down a dead-end street, the driver fled the car and led Simpson on a foot chase through a back yard, police said.

The suspect, identified as Thomas Patterson, 41, of Weston, was taken into custody after Simpson used a Taser to subdue him, police said.

Patterson later refused to submit to a breath test, police said.

He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor/drugs or both, operating with a suspended license, traveling fast, engaging police in pursuit, and reckless driving.

Patterson was released after posting $10,000 surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on July 14.
