Danbury Rep. Carter Hears 'Passionate' Gun Testimony In Newtown

DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury state Rep. Dan Carter (R-2) heard six hours of emotional testimony Wednesday night at Newtown High School, just two days after a marathon 17-hour hearing at the Capitol for the bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety.

Wednesday night’s "speakers were passionate, heartfelt and called for very different action than the majority of speakers at Monday’s gun violence prevention public hearing,” Carter said.

Carter represents parts of Bethel, Danbury, Newtown and Redding and serves on the Banks, Energy and Technology, and General Law committees. He was first elected to the General Assembly in 2010.

Wednesday’s meeting was the last public hearing of the task force group, which is made up of three subgroups of representatives. Each group is focused either on gun control, mental health or school safety. Each group now must create and deliver reports to legislative leaders by Feb. 15, according to a statement.

More than 750 people attended the hearing, including victims’ families, first responders and public officials, according to the statement. The topics addressed included gun control, mental health services, societal violence and school safety.

“I am committed to reconciling the passionate opinions from both sides of these critical issues and recommending meaningful changes to prevent future tragedies,” Carter said.
