FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Several friends, family members and political colleagues were on hand on Friday, April 25, at Old Town Hall as state Rep. Kim Fawcett officially announced her candidacy for the 28th state Senate District, representing Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, Weston and Westport.

Among those on hand to show their support for Fawcett were Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau and Weston First Selectman Gayle Weinstein as well as Democratic Town Committee leaders John Hartwell of Westport, Fran Goldstein of Weston, Barbara Reynolds of Weston (former Weston DTC chair) and Bob Schrage of Easton.

"Thank you for coming together as we officially launch our campaign for the 28th Senate District," Fawcett said at the event. "I am so energized to get out and talk to people over the next six months. This work is about building genuine relationships and being a team player, but it's also about being an independent thinker and ultimately getting results for the people who elect me."

Fawcett said the District 28 race will be significant this year with the departure of Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, who is running for the Republican nomination to run for governor. No Democrat has held the seat since 1974, and no woman has ever been elected.

"Despite the odds, a Democrat can win this seat, and this year I intend to prove -- and I hope you'll join me in proving -- that it's possible," Fawcett said in a statement.

Fawcett had planned a second announcement event later in the day in Newtown but said she canceled that event to return to the state Capitol to vote on a series of judicial appointments.
