With his longstanding record of public service and with the support of McKinney, Hwang says he’s hopeful that he can earn the nomination at the Republican Party Convention in May to run for the 28th District seat.
“I think you have to know when it’s time for your own self to move on to other challenges but also for the people who you represent to have a new leader, and a new voice, and a new perspective,” McKinney said. “I am so excited that Tony is going to take this journey, and I’m working hard to be your governor. But I know Tony is going to be my state senator and that is going to make me very proud.”
If Hwang doesn’t earn the nomination, that would be the end of the road for his political career. He said he won’t run again for his seat in the House this year.
“It’s a risk I’m willing to take,” he said. “I would not interfere with another individual who is making that commitment.”
But he said that he’s looking forward to the challenge. It would be a big step moving from representing part of Fairfield and Trumbull to representing Easton, Weston, Fairfield, Westport and Newtown in the Senate, he said.
“I’ve put in a lot of miles trying to understand each town in the district,” Hwang said.
One of the main focuses of his campaign is to continue working with the communities he represents in a bipartisan approach to all the issues.
“Legislation is only part of the role,” Hwang said. Most of it is working with the local community leaders, both in government and private areas.
He vowed to continue his work on expanding business in the state while reducing government spending.
“You have to represent the people and you have to understand and know them,” Hwang said. “All politics is local.”
