FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Proposed legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants living in Connecticut to get driver’s licenses was passed by the state House of Representatives early Thursday morning, CT News Junkie reports.
If approved, the bill would allow undocumented immigrants living in the state for more than 90 days the ability to apply for a driver’s license beginning in January 2015.
The legislation would require applicants to prove their identity using documentation from their country of citizenship. They would also be required to provide documentation showing their residency in the state.
Another provision of the bill would require applicants undergo a background check. If an applicant has been convicted of a felony in the state, he or she would not be allowed to receive a driver’s license. Additionally, applicants would of course have to pass a driving test.
All licenses issued to undocumented residents would be marked “for driving purposes only." Also, these licenses would need to be renewed every three years.
Now that the bill passed the House, it will next face review by the state Senate.
