Voters Approve Budgets For Easton, Redding, Region 9 Schools

REDDING, Conn. -- Voters who went to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in referendums passed the town budget for Easton and Redding as well as for the shared Regional School District 9, according to the towns' websites.

In a vote of 546-276, Easton residents approved a  $42,943,005 annual budget for the fiscal year 2015-16. This total includes Easton’s share of the Region 9 school budget.

For Regional School District 9, which includes both towns, voters approved $23,143,685 as the 2015-16 operating budget of the school district.  Easton’s share is $10,808,101, where the approval was 537-285 votes. Redding’s share is $12,335,584, where voters approved the measure 1,022 to 548. 

Voters in both towns also approved spending $1,040,647 and authorizing bonds and temporary notes in the same amount to replace the roof at Joel Barlow High School. Easton’s share equals 45.9 percent or $477,657, where voters approved the measure 595 to 225. Redding’s share equals 54.1 percent or $562,990, where the vote to approve was 1,146 to 424.

In Redding, the town budget of $47,796,002 was approved by a vote of 980 to 589. 

Redding voters also approved a number of improvements at the town's schools by a vote of 1,136 to 431. The expenditure of $1,950,071 will be funded by short-term borrowing pending long-term financing. The projects are: 

  • At Redding Elementary School and John Read Middle School: Parking lot paving and curb replacement, $1,126,259
  • At Redding Elementary School: Upgrade electrical service in 1948 and 1957 wings, $300,000
  • At Redding Elementary School: Replace front entrance sidewalks and west wing steps, add security entrance, $224,112
  • At John Read Middle School: Replace bleachers, refinish gym floor, replace wall padding, $150,000
  • At both: Heating/Cooling/Ventilation System Engineering Design, $149,700

But voters turned down a plan to spend $660,000 to convert the Redding Community Center Field No. 2 to a turf field, 517 to 1,050. 

A plan to approve spending $123,000 to replace the Police Communication Tower passed, 870-681. 

But a plan to spend $47,000 for a shelter/pavilion at the Redding Community Center fields was defeated, 671-885.
