A record number of Republican candidates and voters were present for this year’s Clambake. The event is held each year as a fundraiser for the upcoming November elections.
This year’s Clambake included a cocktail hour and traditional New England lobster dinner. Lt. Gov. candidate Heather Somers brought fresh oysters to drive home her campaign message that the state’s oyster industry may be in trouble.
Dan Debicella, a candidate for the 4th Congressional District, told the crowd, “We need Washington to be more like Weston – enough of the partisanship and special interest groups, and more concern for improving the lives of our families. It is time to be Americans first, and Republicans and Democrats second.”
Former GOP Congressional candidate Steve Obsitnik was the master of ceremonies. He introduced the candidates, who were each given time to make a presentation.
Those present were gubernatorial candidate John McKinney and running mate David Walker, Secretary of State candidate Peter Lumaj, Controller candidate Sharon McLaughlin, State Senate candidate Tony Hwang, State Representative candidate John Shaban and Probate Court Judge candidate Lisa Wexler. State Sen. Toni Boucher told the crowd Connecticut must get its fiscal house in order so the state can avoid becoming “Detroit on the Sound.” State Rep. Gail Lavielle and former State Rep. John Stripp also attended, as well as members of the Young Republicans.
“It was not your typical boring political event,” John Zuch of Weston, who was accompanied at the Clambake by Therese Zuch. “We had a great time with neighbors, friends and candidates.”
