Weston Voters Approve Town, Capital Budgets But Reject School Spending Plan

WESTON, Conn. -- Voters in Weston approved two of three questions on the ballot in Thursday's referendum vote on the 2015-16 Weston budget, according to the town website.

The town budget and the capital budget passed, but the Board of Education budget was voted down by five votes. 

The questions and final voters are as follows: 

  • Shall the town operating budget for fiscal year 2015-16 as determined by the Annual Town Budget Meeting be approved? Yes: 160, No: 98
  • Shall the Board of Education operating budget for fiscal year 2015-16 as determined by the Annual Town Budget Meeting be approved? No: 132, Yes: 127 
  • Shall the capital budget for Fiscal Year 2015-16 as determined by the Annual Town Budget Meeting be approved? Yes: 166, No: 92

The total number of votes cast was 259, including officials, absentee and one Grand List voter. 

Voters were casting ballots on the $65,759,943 total budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which begins July 1. This is a 2.29 percent increase over the current year’s budget.

The budget includes:

  • Town operating: $12,408,752, a 2.54 percent increase over this year;
  • School operating: $48,603,782, a 2.62 percent increase;
  • Capital improvements: $1,354,558, a 2.66 percent increase; and 
  • Debt service: $6,390,963, a 1.5 percent decrease.

Voting was held in the Meeting Room at Town Hall.
