Garden Honors Long-Time Friend

Mary Long loved to garden. She also loved books. So, just less than a year after her death, it’s only fitting that her friends and students honor her with a bed of flowers planted outside the New Canaan High School Library. The flowers went in the ground Saturday morning, and there will be a special dedication ceremony with Long’s daughter, Nonie Price, on May 25.

Long was a long-time resident of New Canaan, and raised her family here. She worked in the school system for 36 years, including the last five at the NCHS library. When she died last June, “the kids said, ‘we should do something,’” said Library Department chair Michelle Luhtala, a friend of Long’s. “We thought the garden was fitting, because she was both a gardener and a bibliophile.”

About 30 people showed up for the planting Saturday, including some of friends and co-workers and NCHS students. Together, they planted a 50-by-4-foot bed of Long’s favorite flowers in front of the Library’s patio. The will get together again next Tuesday, May 25 at 2:20 p.m. for a dedication ceremony. “Mary was a wonderful woman,” Luhtala said. “We miss her a lot.”
