Frank G. Keen, 84, Athlete and Teacher

Frank G. Keen of Wilton died on Jan. 15 in Wilton Meadows Home Health Care Center. He was 84 years old. Keen had lived in Wilton since 1965.

An outstanding athlete while he was growing up in Darien, Keen played both baseball and football in the Army and later at Arnold College. He was honored by the Darien Old Timers Association. He was invited to try out with the Brooklyn Dodgers during World War II but declined to serve in the Army.

A career teacher, Keen began working in a one-room schoolhouse in Vermont before moving back to Darien and taking a position at Middlesex Junior High School. He taught at Middlesex for 34 years, eventually becoming head of the science department, and coached football, baseball and basketball before retiring in 1988. He was also a member of Leaders of American Secondary Education.

After serving in the Army he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and a medal for the occupation of Germany.  In addition to a bachelor’s degree in education from Arnold College he later earned a master’s degree in science from the University of Bridgeport, and 6th year degree from St. Joseph’s College.

He is survived by his three sons: Frank Jr. and his wife, Sally, Robert and his wife, Lori, and David and his, wife Melodie; his brother, David; his sister, Marjorie Bruno, and four grandchildren. Keen was predeceased by his wife, Lucille.

The family will receive guests on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2110 Post Road, Darien. Donations in Keen’s memory can be made to the Darien Education Association Scholarship Program, c/o Peter Martin at Middlesex Middle School, 204 Hollow Tree Road, Darien.
