Thirty photographs drawn from collections in Greenwich will be the feature of the Bruce Museum's winter exhibition, "Cindy Sherman: Works from Friends of the Bruce Museum," which opens Saturday.
The photographs feature artist Cindy Sherman, who uses herself as the subject of her pieces, all in imitation of different visual genres, including the film still, centerfold, historical portrait and fashion photography.
The exhibit features large-scale black-and-white and color photographs all showcasing Sherman. But she is adamant that the photographs are not self-portraits. She works alone in her studio by being her own model, photographer, stylist and makeup person. She uses herself to explore various personae to examine the roles of women and the artist.
A scholarly catalog will accompany the exhibit with contributions by the museum's adjunct curator Kenneth Silver and executive director Peter Sutton. It also includes interviews with Linda Nochlin, a feminist art historian, and Lila Acheson Wallace, a professor at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts.
The Bruce Museum is located at 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich. General admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and free for children under 5 and Bruce Museum members. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and closed Mondays and major holidays. For more information, call the museum at 203-869-0376.
