Alexander Matto, a longtime Fairfield resident and decorated veteran of World War II, died Jan. 24 at the age of 90.
Matto was born in Perry Township, Pa., in 1920. He moved to Bridgeport with his family in 1937 and graduated from Bassick High School two years later. He then went to trade school to learn tool making.
Matto joined the Army shortly after the U.S. entered the war. He served under Gen. George Patton in the 423rd Armored Battalion in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe theaters. For his service, Matto earned the Good Conduct and Victory medals.
After the war, Matto came to Fairfield and put his tool- making skills to work at the Bullard Company, where he was employed for 44 years. His friends remember him as a well-read man who enjoyed talking about nature, American history and world history. He also loved to tell stories based on his experiences. Matto was also an avid gardener and delighted his neighbors by sharing what he grew.
Matto is survived by three sisters, Helen Matto and Elizabeth Matto, both of Fairfield, and Goldie Krausse of Bridgeport, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with their families. He was predeceased by his brothers William, Stephen, and Emil Matto and his sister Grace Matto.
A memorial service was held Friday morning at Lesko-Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield, followed by a burial at Mountain Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to United Church of Christ, 2200 North Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06605.
