Multiple "m" words can be attached to trumpeter Chris Botti. Mellow, mellifluous, musically marvelous. And legions of his fans could come up with a full alaphabet more but, instead, why not see him in person, when he headlines Ridgefield Playhouse's Valentines Day Champagne and Diamond Fundraiser on Feb. 13?
Since his 2004 critically acclaimed CD, "When I Fall In Love," Botti's popularity, not just with jazz lovers, has exploded. He's risen to bestselling American Jazz instrumental artist, though a good portion of his audience would call themselves pop people. (He refers to his music as pop instrumental music.)
Earlier in his career, Botti was well-known as a session musician who toured with big names, including Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Sting. Even then, his playing created buzz. Since going solo, he has starred in two PBS specials and produced a handful of award-winning albums (multiple Gold, Platinum and Grammy Awards.) Four albums reached number one.
Jazzmonthly.com described Botti's fast rising trajectory. "Evolving from the smooth jazz roots that brought him to stardom in the 90s, Botti has taken his straightforward, subtle and melodic, Miles Davis influenced style to the top of the traditional charts and into the hearts of millions worldwide. Its exciting the way the trumpeter keeps setting the bar higher for himself, and fun to ponder where the road takes him next."
Immediately next is Ridgefield Playhouse, where Botti, recognized by the NY Times for his "sumptuous, limpid instrumental voice" creates a romantic evening just in time for Valentine's Day. Before his 8 p.m. concert, there is a reception with champagne, hors d'oeuvres, a chocolate fountain and raffle. It begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the evening are $95 and $110.
