Exchange Students Take Up Sledding in Easton

Eric Sun and Kerany Chai came to Connecticut from China to attend school. After nine snowstorms this winter, the exchange students have arguably learned more about sledding than any other subject.

On Tuesday, they joined their American friends at Helen Keller Middle School for an afternoon of fun in the snow. It snows in China, Sun said, but not like this. "This is a lot," he said. "I like the snow."

The boys took turns racing down the hills, hoping to beat the ice that blanketed the town on Wednesday. "We figured we should get out now," said Stephen De Lo Santos, 17.

Coulter Davis, 19, discovered Easton's hill many years ago through friends at the Jewish Community Center. Now he's sharing his secret spot with his friends from both continents. "I was in Ecuador last year," he said. "I haven't been here in forever."

Coulter and his brother, Chad, 14, rode up to Easton with their mother, Diana Davis of Bridgeport. "It's nice to stay home" with the bad weather, she said. "I make nice meals, homemade soup, hot chocolate. It's nice and relaxing." She said the weather has caused problems but spending more time with her family is certainly a benefit.

On Feb. 11, Eric and Kerany will fly back to Shaghai after spending time at Brien McMahon High School's Center for Global Studies in Norwalk. Besides learning about contemporary issues at school, the boys are certainly returning to the Orient with a New Englander's knowledge of sleigh riding.
