The scarlet-letter list is part of a new zero-tolerance policy, Executive Director Patrick Foye said.
Topping the ledger are drivers of vehicles leased or rented by Enterprise Rent-a-Car, which trades as EAN Holdings of Tulsa, Okla.: The company owes $167,000 in tolls and $1,783,288 in fines, according to the list released today by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
No. 4 is Salem Truck Leasing Inc. of Carlstadt, which owes $227,000 in fees on top of $104,000 in errant tolls for the vehicles it rents and leases, records show.
The top individual who owes the most, according to the authority, is Jean Davis of Englewood, who it said ducked $21,365 in tolls, leading to $102,141 in fines. She’s No. 12 on the list behind the trucking and vehicle leasing companies.
A few spots ahead of her is a North Bergen-based waste management company, Cardella Trucking, which owes $149,807 in fees.
“This list was prepared to support the agency’s ongoing enforcement and toll collection process,” the authority said. “This list will be modified periodically to account for payments collected, new violations and new violators added.”
Criteria for making the list was a collective debt of more than $50,000 — a total of 37 businesses or individuals. It doesn’t include an undetermined number of other violators who owe less than the benchmark.
Foye said he’s asking prosecutors in New Jersey and district attorneys in New York to imprison “the most egregious toll deadbeats.”
“For too long, toll violators have put themselves above the law, running up bills that range from the thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Those days are over,” Foye said.
“This is a new era at the Port Authority, and I will have zero-tolerance for truckers and motorists who cheat the system and shortchange the rest of us.”
The release of the deadbeat list came on “one of the busiest days in recent memory” at the George Washington Bridge, said the authority’s Al Della Fave.
Five people were either arrested or served summonses by officers stationed at the tolls. One was charged with drunk driving, Della Fave said.
No. 17 is Carol Green of Teaneck, with $16,064 in unpaid tolls and $70,075 in fines, on the authority list.
