The detectives were serving warrants when they were stopped at the intersection of Fulton and Mercer streets around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff Richard Berdnik said Thursday morning.
"After dispersing a group, they searched an open field, and observed a black object lying beside a mound of rocks that were stacked on top of each other," Berdnik said.
It turned out to be a black Bryco Arms .22-caliber handgun with an empty six-round magazine, he said.
The weapon was reported stolen during a residential burglary in Volusia, FL on Feb. 9, 1987, the sheriff said.
"One less illegal gun in circulation hopefully avoids a potential act of gun violence," he said.
