Greenwich Detective Honored For His Role In Arrest Of Bank Robber

The Greenwich Police Department recognized Manning "for his self-initiated, proactive police patrol," which led to the arrest of David E. Byers, 34, for two bank robberies and a gas station robbery in late April. Police said Byers robbed the same Chase Bank twice in one week before fleeing to San Diego, where he was eventually arrested.

Manning's work played a crucial role in Byers's eventual arrest, police said. Manning saw the car used in the bank robberies parked in the J House parking lot and notified police headquarters of the suspect's location. Patrol set up a perimeter, and saw Byers exit J House, get in the car and attempt to flee the scene, according to police.

The suspect drove over two parking barriers and nearly hit a Greenwich officer while trying to escape, police said. He eventually abandoned his car on I-95 in the middle of a pursuit. This started a cross-country manhunt that included several additional police pursuits.

Byers was eventually captured by the FBI's Fugitive Task Force in San Diego on May 2. The arrest was based on information developed by the Greenwich Police Department.
