Lebanon Dad Leaves Behind Young Daughter After Deadly Shooting

A 33-year-old Lebanon dad was shot dead on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, police announced that afternoon.

Thomas M. Vance was found with a gunshot wound in the first block of Jones Street around 8 a.m., according to Lebanon City Police.

He was taken "to a Dauphin County Medical Facility where he died from his injuries," the police said.

The suspect stayed on the scene and was taken into police custody without any incident.

The police have released the following information about the deadly shooting:

"The initial investigation suggests that the incident began as a verbal altercation and escalated. During the investigation several video sources of the incident were reviewed along with witnesses interviewed. The firearm believed to be used in the incident was recovered by police at the scene. Both parties involved in the incident were (known) to each other, this was not a random act of gun violence."

The case is under review by the Lebanon County District Attorney's Office.

Thomas was "born in Lebanon on February 6, 1990, he was the son of Kathy J. (Spallone) wife of Todd R. Vogelsong of Newville and Tom A. husband of Sherry L. (Kirby) Vance of Lebanon. He was a graduate of Northern Lebanon High School Class of 2008. Thomas worked in construction. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, ice fishing and hunting. He especially loved spending time with his daughter, Leila Maria," as stated in his obituary. 

"In addition to his parents and his daughter, he is survived by his sisters Chasity R. Vance of Atlanta, GA, Katelyn L. Kirby of Annville, Madison T. Vance of Lebanon, and Teaghan M. Vogelsong of Newville," according to his obituary. 

A visitation followed by a memorial gathering was held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at the Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Jonestown. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were to the Humane Society of Lebanon County, 150 N. Ramona Rd., Myerstown, PA 17067.

On Sunday, May 14, family friend Tammy Castaneda launched a GoFundMe campaign to help her nephew's daughter, Leila Maria. In the first 24 hours, it has raised $1,375 USD of a $2,500 goal from 27 donations, with several top donations of $100.
