“There have been no indications that there have been threats to our schools,” Police Chief Gary MacNamara said. “However, this incident reminds us that we need to be vigilant in our security measures.”
Staff members are currently stationed at the front entrances of each school in Fairfield to check all visitors and direct them to the sign-in procedures at the front office until further notice, Superintendent David Title said Monday in a letter to parents. District maintenance workers are also checking all security features, including door locks and cameras, to make sure they are working properly.
Fairfield Police plan to have officers at each public school during arrivals and dismissal times, as well as “periodic visits” throughout the school day. “That’s really meant to be a reassurance to people, to calm their nerves,” MacNamara said.
For the long term, MacNamara, Title and First Selectman Michael Tetreau will meet with school administrators and each other to talk about potential changes to security systems and emergency plans. Principals have also been asked to meet with their in-school staff members to make sure security plans are being followed, Title said.
“We are committed to keeping our schools safe for students, staff and families,” Title’s letter reads. “While our thoughts and prayers are with those directly impacted by the events in Newtown, please be assured that we are also focused on the safety and well-being of those in the Fairfield Public Schools Community.”
