Walters will take the place of Michael Bernardi, who announced earlier this year that he will leave Weston to become the new principal of Southbury’s Rochambeau Middle School. Walters is expected to start in early August.

Walters has been the dean of Student Development at Derby Middle School since 2012. Before that he was a math teacher at Fairfield’s Roger Ludlowe Middle School, where he served as a math team leader and helped write curriculum for an anti-bullying and character development program.

He also led Roger Ludlowe’s Math Team and trained other teachers to use SMART boards in classrooms. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Vermont, a master of arts in education and a sixth-year degree from Southern Connecticut State University.

“I am very pleased that Mr. Walters will be joining the Weston team,” Weston Public Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer said in a press release. “He is a dedicated middle school educator, and he brings a passion for student achievement and character development that will be highly valued in the Weston Middle School community.”

With the appointment, Weston now has three new administrators due to arrive in the district for the next school year. Last month the Board of Education appointed a new assistant principal at Weston Intermediate School. The district also decided to fill a new position at central office in the Pupil Services and Special Education Department.
