NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Community College Extended Studies and Workforce Education Division is offering a 39-session EMT Basic program starting on Monday, Jan. 26.

Classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuition is $999; there is an additional cost for text.

The program will teach proper techniques in first aid, patient assessments, extrication, communication and various other concepts to give a basic beginning background for students to become an Emergency Medical Technician.

Included in the class will be HAZMAT and Terrorism awareness training. The class meets all National Registry and Connecticut requirements. Students will be eligible to take the National Registry exam.

This course is offered in partnership with Norwalk Hospital and requires an extensive amount of reading and reading comprehension. All students are required to complete EMS clinical time at Norwalk Hospital. Students are required to provide evidence of a physical exam performed within 12 months before the start date of class.

Instructor Harry A. Down II, EMT-P, EMS-I, has been a field paramedic a Norwalk Hospital for 21 years and has more than 30 years of experience in pre-hospital emergency care. He has been an EMT instructor for 20 years and is the primary EMT-Basic instructor at Norwalk Community College.
