State Representative John Shaban (R-Redding) organized the event and the donation of the new tree to replace the old Sugar Maple tree destroyed in recent storms. Rep. Shaban was in attendance Wednesday morning to celebrate the planting.
The students stood in front of their new seedling and took turns reading poems aloud, expressing what Earth Day and the environment meant to them. Shaban, Ranking Member of the Environment Committee and an attorney with an environmental law degree, sat and listened with the crowd before offering a few words.
“We should all thank the Redding Garden Club and Redding Land Trust, two esteemed non-profit organizations in our district, for donating the tree and participating in this event,” said Shaban.
“This ceremony was originally meant to take place on Earth Day, but as many of you said in your poems, every day is Earth Day. Like this young tree we are all of and from the Earth, so we must all do what we can to protect our environment. Let’s all remember our responsibility to the Earth the next time we sit in the shade of a tree like this one.”
