Bedford, Katonah Girls Help Danbury School Win New England Basketball Title

DANBURY, Conn. – Three girls basketball players from Wooster School earned All-Star honors in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference after leading the team to its first New England Class E championship.

Kate MacNutt, Venue Okwuka and Blair Hamilton earned all-New England honors for Wooster.

"This was an amazing way to cap off a very special season," coach Dave MacNutt said.

Wooster defeated Providence Country Day, 44-29, in Sunday's championship game. No. 2 seeded Wooster defeated Forman in the quarterfinals, 50-24, and in the semifinals, took out No. 3 Woodward School, 65-44. The tournament was played at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass.

Okuwuka scored 14 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and added six steals and six blocks in the championship game. Hamilton added 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. MacNutt had 11 points, six steals and four blocks. MacNutt was also selected the MVP of the championship game. Becca Kohn added seven points and nine assists. Okwuka also had 19 points and 18 rebounds in the semifinals, while MacNutt scored 16 in the semifinals.

Wooster’s roster includes Danbury’s Rebecca Kohn, Audrey Merchant, Taylor Milana and Shauna Vines; Redding’s Sarah Fried; Weston’s Anna Lucia (Lucy) Kiely; Sueann Barsh of Somers, N.Y.; Ava Cohn of Bedford Corners, N.Y.; Melanie Hodor of Katonah, N.Y.; Blair Hamilton of Newtown; Kate MacNutt of New Milford; and Venus Okwuka of Brookfield. Manager Isabella Santos is also from Brookfield.

Wooster set a school record with 24 wins and won its third straight Housatonic Valley Athletic League season and tournament championship. The Generals only loss was a 43-31 setback to Greens Farms Academy in January.

"Our players displayed a great deal of heart and character in the win over Woodward and the win over Providence Country Day," coach Dave MacNutt said. "Each member of the team came up big at different times during the tournament, so this was a true team effort. I told the players after the game that I've coached nearly 1,000 varsity games at this point in my career, and I have never been more proud of a team than I am today. Congratulations, Lady Generals, you are New England champions.”
