The Hatters finished with 58 points, while Staples finished with 59. Defending champion Ridgefield finished third with 87 points.

The Hatters won seven straight titles from 2005 to 2012 before losing to Ridgefield last year. Danbury also won five straight from 1999 to 2003 before Staples won in 2004.

Eric Waterman covered the 5k course in 16:02 to lead Danbury and finished eighth overall. Ryan Ansel, Ryan Fox, Corey Mullins and Jack Adamski were Danbury's other five scorers.

The top five Hatters were within 20 seconds of each other. Adamski finished nine seconds ahead of Staples' fifth runner and was the deciding point in the meet.

Danbury's girls finished 10th with 297 points. Staples won the girls race, led by first-place finisher Hannah DeBalsi. Gabriela Colado was Danbury's top finisher, taking 51st in 16:54 on the 4-kilometer course.

Danbury's league dominance in the boys race shows no signs of abating. The Hatters had 11 of the top 12 runners in the junior varsity race. Bradley Fox finished second in 17:11 to lead the Hatters. In the freshmen race, Danbury had five runners in the top 15. Dan Nichols finished second overall to pace Danbury.

Danbury will return to racing Saturday at the Class LL championships at Wickham Park in Manchester. Danbury has won 11 Class LL titles since 2000, and last won in 2012. Ridgefield won the Class LL title last year.
