In the Class L large tournament, top-seeded Darien will meet No. 4 Naugatuck on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Darien.

No. 2 New Canaan will host No. 3 Wethersfield on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Darien (11-0) climbed to the top of the state’s MaxPreps’ football rankings with its 28-21 win over New Canaan on Thanksgiving. Darien is attempting to become the first team in school history to finish the season unbeaten and untied. The 1992 team finished 11-0-1. The Blue Wave’s last state title came in 1996.

New Canaan (9-1) won the state championship last year, beating the Blue Wave in the title game. The Rams are ranked No. 3 in the state by MaxPreps.

If Darien and New Canaan win on Saturday. they will meet for the state title on Dec. 12 or  13 at a site and time to be determined.

Naugatuck (9-2) lost 47-12 to Ansonia on Thanksgiving. The Greyhounds also lost to Wolcott this season, and are ranked 43rd in the state by MaxPreps.

Wethersfield (11-0) beat Newington, 21-7, in its regular season finale. Wethersfield is ranked No. 30 in the state by MaxPreps.

The state tournament revised its format this year. In past years, eight teams competed for title in four divisions. This year, each division is bracketed into two four-team divisions -- small and large -- and reduced the number of potential playoff games for each team from three to two.

St. Joseph from the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference reached the Class M Small playoffs as the No. 2 seed and will play Ellington/Somers.
